CARRERAS TOBACCO COMPANY

Carreras Tobacco Company was a British company that produced tobacco, cigars and cigarettes, founded in London in the 19th century by Don José Carreras Ferrer, a Spanish nobleman. The company remained independent until it merged with Rothmans of Pall Mall in November 1958. In 1972 the name was used as a vehicle for the merger of various European tobacco interests to form Rothmans International. The company was known for its brands such as Craven A, Black Cat and Turf. The company was also a pioneer in the use of collectible cards inside its cigarette packs. Many of the London buildings that housed its factories still exist, some converted to residential use. The “Carreras” brand was withdrawn by Rothmans International in 1988.
