CARRERAS TOBACCO COMPANY

CARRERAS TOBACCO COMPANY

The Spanish Nobleman, the Black Cat, and the Temple of Art Deco: From Spain to Wardour Street

The Carreras story begins in the 19th century with a touch of exotic charm amidst the grayness of London. It was founded by Don José Carreras Ferrer , a Spanish nobleman who opened his first shop on Wardour Street. Despite the founder's foreign origins, the company quickly became a pillar of British industry, remaining fiercely independent for over a century.

The Legend of "Black Cat" and Iconic Brands

Carreras is famous for brands that have made smoking history, such as Craven 'A' (the first machine-made cigarette with a cork filter) and the popular Turf . But the most iconic brand is undoubtedly Black Cat . Legend has it that Don José had a black cat that loved to sleep in the window of his Wardour Street shop, curled up among the products. Customers began to identify the shop with that cat, which soon became the official logo and a symbol of luck and quality, one of the first and most successful examples of a brand mascot in history.

The Architectural Legacy: The Arcadia Works

The company's success translated into an architectural monument. In 1928, Carreras opened his new factory in Camden, London: the Arcadia Works . It was no ordinary factory, but a temple in Neo-Egyptian Art Deco style, inspired by the recent discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb. The entrance was guarded by two giant bronze statues of black cats. The building still exists today (converted into offices) and is one of North London's most recognizable landmarks.

Collector's Paradise

Carreras was one of the world's leading cigarette card manufacturers. During their golden age (the 1920s and 1930s), their series were ubiquitous. Often, the cards didn't bear the "Carreras" name on the back, but rather the name of the specific product they were included in, so you'll find thousands of sets branded "Black Cat" or "Turf." Their collections on movies, sports, and general culture are vast and form the core of many vintage collections.

Mergers and the End of a Name

Carreras's long independence ended in November 1958 with its merger with Rothmans of Pall Mall . In 1972, this entity became the vehicle for the creation of the European giant Rothmans International (also merging German and Dutch interests). Although its historic brands survived for decades under the new ownership, the "Carreras" corporate name was formally retired from Rothmans International in 1988, closing a glorious chapter in London's industrial history.
