CAVANDERS LTD

The Icon of the Trenches and the Masters of Photography The Ancient Roots and the Icon of the Great War

Founded in 1775 in Manchester (and later moved to London), Cavanders Ltd. boasted the title of one of the oldest tobacco companies in the United Kingdom. Despite its long history, the brand that defined its existence came much later: Army Club . Launched shortly before the First World War, Army Club became a true cultural icon. Thanks to a name that evoked the exclusivity of officers' clubs and ingenious marketing centered on the figure of "Tommy" (the British soldier), Army Club cigarettes became ubiquitous at the front and at home. Their packaging, and in particular the splendid lithographed tins of the 1920s (often in imitation copper or bronze), are now pieces of tangible history.

The Pioneer of "Photo Cards"

For cigarette card collectors, Cavanders is an absolute cult name. The company was among the pioneers in using real photography instead of illustrations. In the 1920s and 1930s, Cavanders produced photographic series of exceptional quality. Particularly famous (and sought-after) are their "double" or "stereoscopic" cards, designed to be viewed through special viewers that created a 3D effect. Subjects ranged from "Ancient Egypt" to "Peepshow," making these series among the most innovative and technically complex of the time.

Mergers and a Surprising Indian Renaissance

In 1961, the independent company was acquired by the Godfrey Phillips Company , another historic British manufacturer with strong interests in India. Contrary to popular belief, the acquisition did not spell the end for the brands. Although British production of Army Club ceased in the following decades (following the absorption of Godfrey Phillips's UK arm by Philip Morris), the Cavanders name enjoyed an unexpected resurgence. Today, Cavanders is an extremely popular and widespread cigarette brand in India , manufactured and distributed by Godfrey Phillips India Ltd. , demonstrating a commercial resilience that has lasted nearly 250 years.
